Biography

imam photoImam Elturk was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1955. He immigrated to America in 1976 amid the start of the Lebanese civil war. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics, he worked as an Electronics Engineering consultant for many years. He became interested in learning about Islam and the Qur’an in 1989. He then studied under the Islamic thinker and scholar Dr. Israr Ahmad (1996-2001). Courses include, Theology (Aqidah, Faith and Tawheed, Monotheism), Modes of Worship, Sirah (Prophetic tradition and methodology), Exegesis of the Qur’an, Hadith (Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), and Islamic Social Sciences.


Imam Elturk is very active in the Muslim community of North America, both as a leader and a speaker. He has been propagating the message of the Qur'an to Muslims and non-Muslims alike through his regular Friday sermons and lectures in Mosques and other facilities all across America. He is a publically engaged Muslim leader and a leading interfaith activist in the Detroit Area.

Imam Elturk serves on many boards. He is,

• The Treasurer and member of the InterFaith Leadership Council (IFLC) Executive Board, formerly the Interfaith Partners of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion (MRDI).
• A member of the Religious Leaders Forum of the Abrahamic Faiths.
• A member of the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice (ICRJ) Executive Board.
• A member of the Church, Police, and City (CPC) of the City of Warren.
• A member of the American Red Cross Southeast Michigan Regional Executive Board.
• A Co-Chair of the Imams Council of the Michigan Muslim Community Council (MMCC) and a member of the MMCC Executive Board.
• A member of the University Islamic Center (Wayne State) Executive Board, in Detroit, Michigan.
• A member of the American Society for Religious and Cultural Understanding (ASRCU) Executive Board. ASRCU is a dawah (propagation) organization focuses on prisons and correctional facilities in Michigan.
• A member of the American Human Rights Council (AHRC) Executive Board, Dearborn Michigan.
• An Adjunct Professor with the Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) in Detroit, Michigan.
• The Imam and President of the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA) in Warren, Michigan.
• Married with five children. He resides in Troy, Michigan.
